Mary and William arrived home. She began with her new life while he was at his basin. There’s not much to do when you are only a brain and an eye without a body, except for thinking and seeing things. Things that you won’t be able to change at all, of course, due to your circumstances.
William seemed to know this, and Mary was sure, that the tiny flash of light that appeared in his eye at certain occasions, was a sign of his discomfort. Anyway, her life had change since his “death”, or “absence of his body”, and she wasn’t going to give up her new freedom just because of him. So, instead, she kept on doing the things that annoyed him the most when he was alive, such as smoking, going out, and watching T.V. in bed, always making sure that he could see her.
One day, exactly a year after their return from hospital, Mary received a phone call. It was Dr. Landy, the scientist that had been in charge of William’s experiment. He sounded very excited and he told her, “Look Mrs. Pearl, there’s something I want you to know, could you please come to my office tomorrow morning?”
“ Yes,” she answered immediately, but after hanging up, she had a strange feeling and thought that, she wasn’t sure if it had been a good idea to accept his invitation.
The following day, when she arrived there, and after listening to what Dr. Landy had to say, she knew she had been right.
She began to feel nervous and, thirty years of her life, those she had lived with a “complete” William, came to her mind in a second.
What was she going to do? Now that she knew there was a possibility to place him into a new body. Everything would have been easier for her, she thought, if this option hadn’t cropped up, but, despite the revenge she had taken with him the last year, for having always been treated as inferior, she wasn’t sure if she could deny him this sort of “rebirth”.
The decision was difficult, in fact, for her, it was traumatic.. She had the opportunity to continue living at her ease, or to began living for him again.
The problem was her conscience, in fact, all those years beside William, had made her a guilty woman. She had to get rid of that feeling or devote her life to please him as it had always been.
Suddenly, she had an idea. She could agreed with the experiment, but, when he woke up, she would be far away in another city. No, that was silly. She could deny the permission to do the experiment, and pretend that she had never listened about it. No, that wasn’t fair for William. For William? And what about her? Who was going to think about her if she didn’t do it herself? She knew that William’s nature was one of selfishness and despotism and he was not going to change just because he had a new body, instead, he was going to continue making her life impossible. But, not that time. Not again.
She took her coat and headed for Landy’s office. She had the answer to his question and she wasn’t going to change her mind despite all the attempts he had made to convince her.
Dr. Landy greeted her as usual, but he noticed something strange in her face, something like rage or worse, something like hate.
“ Do it,” she said.
Knowing that she wasn’t a confident woman, he took his pen immediately, and make her sign the authorization for the operation.
She had always believed in destiny, that’s why William had always said she was a silly woman. Of course, she wasn’t going to listen to him. Destiny was something you couldn’t change.
